This allowed them to spread not only in the immediate vicinity of the reactor but also across the northern hemisphere, especially over Europe. Highly volatile radioactive substances such as iodine and caesium reached heights of over one kilometre as a result of the thermal uplift. Non-volatile radioactive substances such as strontium and plutonium were mainly deposited in the immediate vicinity of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant in Ukraine as well as in the bordering areas of Belarus.
